This is a fine example of Japanese wooden black lacquer Kōzō-ji style sprinkled lacquer large Natsume, a classic Natsume used to hold thin matcha (usucha, 薄茶) powder in the Japanese tea ceremony. It comes with its original paulownia wood storage box (共箱).

The lid is decorated with a prominent double chrysanthemum motif—an auspicious symbol in Japanese culture representing longevity and purity. The outline is rendered in gold sprinkled lacquer, with the petals filled in red sprinkled lacquer, creating clear, layered detail. Delicate floral and branch patterns surround the chrysanthemum, enhancing the elegant garden-like composition. The design continues onto the body, forming a complete, unified decorative scheme.

Crafted using the flat sprinkled lacquer technique, gold powder is set in lacquer and polished to a soft luster. The deep black lacquer surface creates a strong contrast with the gold decoration, elegant yet restrained. A fine gold line encircles the rim, adding refinement and structural definition.

This piece includes its original paulownia storage box, a yellow protective cloth (共布), and a paper label inscribed “Kōzō-ji Large Natsume (高生寺 大棗)”. The decorative style is derived from Kodai-ji Sprinkled Lacquer (高台寺蒔絵), one of Kyoto’s most celebrated lacquerware traditions, famous for its lavish gold decoration and natural motifs.

The storage box shows minor age-related oxidation and light wear, but remains structurally sound. The Natsume itself displays gentle natural aging and slight signs of use consistent with its age. The overall condition is good.
