Item Description:
伊藤公象 Ito Kosho (1932-2024)
Untitled — Ceramic Sculpture Signed
This remarkable ceramic sculpture is an original work by Ito Kosho, one of Japan's most significant and internationally recognized contemporary artists working in clay.
The piece is signed by the artist and exemplifies his lifelong pursuit of form born not from deliberate human intervention, but from the inherent properties of earth itself.
The organic, compact form — modest in scale yet commanding in presence — reflects Ito's signature aesthetic: a tension between the accidental and the intentional, the raw and the refined.
The piece invites close contemplation, revealing subtle surface textures and tonal nuances that speak to the transformative power of firing and the unpredictability of clay as a living material.
A rare opportunity to acquire a signed work by this pioneering master of ceramic art, whose legacy spans decades of international exhibition and whose passing in 2024 makes original signed works increasingly precious.

Artist Profile
伊藤公象 Ito Kosho (1932-2024) was born in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture. After losing his father during World War II, he began studying pottery in his mid-teens under Nakamura Suiko, a master of Kutani ware. Drawn more to form than decoration, he eventually departed from traditional ceramics and later pursued a career in art journalism before returning to studio practice as a contemporary artist.
From 1969 he was based in Kasama City, Ibaraki Prefecture, where in 1972 he established his studio "Ito Atelier" together with his wife, fellow artist Ito Chika. He represented Japan at major international art exhibitions in 1978 (winning the Gold Medal) and 1984, and held a solo exhibition at a prominent international museum in 2002. A major retrospective was held at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo and the Ibaraki Ceramic Art Museum in 2009.
Ito is best known for minimizing human intervention in the creative process, allowing the properties and chance behavior of clay to determine form. His landmark series include "Tannanmentai" (1974), "Shukkyoku" (early 1980s), "Kido" (1982), and "Wood Flesh, Soil Blade" (from 1990). He also served as professor at Joshibi University of Art and Design and Kanazawa College of Art. He passed away on July 6, 2024, at the age of 92.
