This striking stoneware flower vase is a work by an unidentified contemporary Japanese studio potter, signed with the hiragana character ta (た) incised into the lower body — a personal seal that speaks to the individuality and craft authenticity of the piece.

The form is a confident, elongated teardrop: a full, swelling body that tapers gradually upward into a narrow cylindrical neck with a tightly compressed, straight-cut opening. The silhouette is bold yet refined, and the vase commands immediate presence whether displayed alone or within a broader interior arrangement. It sits equally at ease in a traditional Japanese washitsu setting or within a minimalist modern interior — its abstract surface decoration possessing an energy that bridges the two sensibilities effortlessly.
The decoration is the visual heart of this piece and is executed with extraordinary freedom and physicality. Over a warm, sandy beige stoneware body — its surface bearing the horizontal marks of the throwing process, giving it a quiet textile-like quality — a deep, near-black dark brown iron glaze has been applied in broad, sweeping fields. These dark areas are not smoothly painted but vigorously poured and trailed, their edges ragged and volcanic, pooling in thick viscous ridges and bubbling at their margins. Scattered across both the dark and light areas is a secondary layer of rich dark chocolate-brown splatter — bold drops, elongated streaks, and fine spray — applied with the spontaneous energy of action painting. The result is a surface that reads simultaneously as landscape, calligraphy, and abstract composition; a different world appears from every angle.
