Philippe Henri Noyer (1917–1985) - Lady in Red

Philippe Henri Noyer (1917–1985) — Woman in Red / Lady in Red, 1963 Colour lithograph on wove paper A striking figurative lithograph by the French painter and printmaker Philippe Henri Noyer, depicting a young woman seated on a red sofa, wearing a red dress, black stockings and stiletto heels. The composition combines bold flat colour fields with loose charcoal-style shading in the background — a technique characteristic of Noyer’s figurative print work of the 1960s. The monochromatic red palette, elongated figure and fashionable subject matter reflect the artist’s signature blend of classical draughtsmanship and mid-century Parisian elegance. This work is one of the earliest known dated lithographs of this composition. A closely related version titled Lady in Red (1969) and another titled Toulouse-Lautrec at Work are documented on MutualArt, confirming this as a recurring and significant subject in Noyer’s print oeuvre. The 1963 date predates these later editions by six years. Signed in pencil lower right: Ph. Noyer 1963 Numbered lower left: 134/150 Sheet size: 76 × 53 cm Condition: Good vintage condition; some light creasing to sheet margins, not affecting the image area About the artist Philippe Henri Noyer (Lyon, 1917 – 1985) studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon and later at the Paul Colin School in Paris, where he encountered the Surrealist movement. His painting career began in 1943 under the patronage of dealer Emmanuel David at the prestigious Drouant-David Gallery in Paris. Known for his stylised female figures, luxurious settings and touches of fantasy, Noyer gained international recognition with exhibitions in Paris, London, New York and Los Angeles. He produced over 2,000 oils and watercolours, and his lithographs remain actively collected. His son Denis-Paul Noyer (b. 1940) followed him as a painter and lithographer.
