3-Time Prime Minister Award Artist Sadao Kishi & Genji Yamada Kokeshi Set
Item Description:
This is a set of two creative kokeshi dolls by two different artists.
The larger doll is by Kishi Sadao and is titled ときめき (Tokimeki), which can be translated as “Fluttering Heart” or “Excitement.” It has a graceful standing form with a calm closed-eye expression, dark hair, and a warm brown kimono decorated with colorful autumn maple leaves. The vivid red, yellow, orange, and green leaf motifs create a beautiful seasonal impression. The bottom label notes that it was purchased on June 15, 1986, at Yamadera.
The smaller doll is by Yamada Genji and is titled 待春 (Taishun), meaning “Waiting for Spring.” It has a soft light-wood tone, a gentle hidden-face expression, and a decorative body with white and reddish floral motifs. The contrast between the autumn-themed larger doll and the spring-themed smaller doll makes this a charming seasonal pair.
Both pieces show age-related surface wear, small scratches, scuffs, and patina, as seen in the photos.
Artist:
Kishi Sadao was a creative kokeshi artist from Gunma Prefecture. His artist mark is 貞男. He received the Prime Minister’s Award three times, as well as multiple other awards including the Gunma Prefectural Governor’s Award, the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Award, and the Minister of International Trade and Industry Award.
Yamada Genji is the artist of the smaller work, titled 待春 (Taishun). No additional biographical details are included here beyond the supplied artist and work information.
