Vom Verkäufer bereitgestellte Beschreibung
A charming genre painting with genuine character: Ludwig Dominik Kohrl (1858–1927) depicts a jovial, portly monk enjoying a hearty meal. In one hand he holds a stoneware beer stein, in the other a radish, while a loaf of bread rests on the plate before him. The scene perfectly captures the warm humor and storytelling spirit of late 19th-century monastic genre painting, rendered with remarkable attention to expression despite its intimate scale.
Oil on wooden panel, probably painted in the late 19th century. Signed upper right: “L. Kohrl.”
Dimensions:
Painting: approx. 17 × 13.5 cm (6.7 × 5.3 in)
Frame: approx. 37 × 34 cm (14.6 × 13.4 in)
The frame is a work of art in its own right: finely carved and gilded, featuring a deeply sculpted foliate frieze. It is contemporary with the painting and has accompanied it for well over a century.
Condition:
Authentically preserved and in keeping with its age. The painting shows light craquelure and a few small losses along the edges, entirely consistent with a work of this period. The frame exhibits slight age-related warping and corresponding signs of wear, bearing witness to a long and genuine history. It has not been restored, and the original material remains untouched.
A delightful and unspoiled cabinet piece for collectors of genre painting and admirers of historic period frames.
