A finely atmospheric view of Bacharach, the historic Rhineland town set within the Rhine Gorge. Lepié captures its characteristic half-timbered houses, the Gothic spires of St Peter’s Church, and the broad river landscape beyond, evoking the romantic appeal for which Bacharach became celebrated in the 19th century.
Ferdinand Lepié was a Bohemian landscape painter. He studied at the Prague Academy from 1841 to 1844 and worked as a teacher at Strahov Monastery. From the early 1860s, he taught painting at the Imperial Court in Vienna.
