Triassic Petrified Wood Slice – Madagascar – 26 × 24 cm

A striking cross-section of petrified wood from the Triassic of Madagascar, dating back more than 200 million years to an age when the earliest dinosaurs inhabited the supercontinent Pangaea.

This substantial slice measures approximately 26 × 24 × 2 cm and preserves the original structure of the ancient tree in remarkable detail. The broad cross-section displays a beautiful natural palette of silvery grey, cream, ochre and deep reddish-brown, created as minerals gradually replaced the organic tissues of the wood during fossilisation.

Particularly attractive is the contrast between the pale outer wood and the dark, almost charcoal-coloured central region. Numerous radial fractures and mineral-filled veins extend outward from the centre, while subtle growth structures and variations in the fossilised tissue remain visible across the polished surface. The irregular natural perimeter retains the original outline of the trunk, giving the specimen considerable character.

Petrified wood forms through a prolonged process of permineralisation and mineral replacement. After burial, mineral-rich groundwater penetrates the wood and, under suitable conditions, progressively replaces and infills its cellular structure. Over geological time the original organic material disappears, leaving a stone replica that can preserve surprisingly fine details of the original tree.

With its generous dimensions, strong colour contrast and distinctly preserved woody structure, this specimen is both an attractive natural display piece and a tangible record of Madagascar's prehistoric forests.
