Antique Vertical Steam Engine – Attributed to Bing – Germany – c. 1905–1915

Antique vertical live steam engine, attributed to Gebrüder Bing, Nuremberg, Germany, dating from approximately 1905–1915.

An attractive early technical toy featuring a vertical cylindrical boiler, tall chimney, water level gauge, steam fittings, external cylinder mechanism and a large side-mounted flywheel.

The substantial cast-metal base stands on four decorative feet and retains traces of its original green and gold-coloured finish.

The construction consists of various metals, including brass, steel/iron and nickel-plated components.

Based on its construction and design, the steam engine shows characteristics associated with early models produced by Gebrüder Bing of Nuremberg. As no clearly readable manufacturer's mark has been found, the attribution to Bing should be considered probable rather than definitive.

Period: circa 1905–1915
Country of origin: Germany
Manufacturer: Gebrüder Bing, Nuremberg – attributed
Type: Vertical live steam engine / technical toy
Height: approx. 31 cm
Weight: approx. 1 kg

Mechanical condition:
The flywheel turns freely and the piston mechanism operates when the flywheel is turned by hand. The mechanical movement is therefore present and functional.

The steam engine has not been tested under steam or pressure, so operation with steam and the pressure-tightness of the boiler cannot be guaranteed.

The machine is in authentic antique condition with visible traces of age and use, including oxidation, surface rust, scratches, patina and losses to the original painted finish.

Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description.

An interesting collector's item and decorative example of an early German steam-powered technical toy from the beginning of the 20th century.
