80 Vintage Japanese Temple, Shrine & Buddhist Art Postcards – Personal Collection
This is a personal collection of 80 vintage Japanese postcards and souvenir cards, collected from the 1970s onwards by my late uncle during his travels throughout Japan.
My uncle enjoyed visiting historic Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines across Japan, and he personally collected these postcards and souvenir cards at the places he visited. The collection has remained together as part of his personal travel collection.
The approximately 80 items feature a fascinating variety of Japanese religious and cultural heritage, including Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines, Buddha and Bodhisattva statues, Buddhist sculptures, pagodas, temple halls, gates, corridors, gardens and traditional Japanese architecture.
The collection includes material relating to important historic sites such as Tōdai-ji (東大寺) and Jōruri-ji (浄瑠璃寺), together with postcards and souvenir material from other temples and sacred sites throughout Japan.
A particularly interesting part of the collection is the group of Buddhist art and sculpture photographs. These include detailed monochrome and colour images of Buddha and Bodhisattva statues, allowing the collection to be appreciated not only as travel memorabilia but also as a visual record of Japanese Buddhist art.
Several items are preserved in their original decorative temple folders and souvenir envelopes, featuring Japanese calligraphy, traditional motifs and designs associated with the individual temples.
What makes this collection particularly appealing is its personal provenance. These items were not recently assembled from different sources for resale. They were personally acquired by my late uncle while actually visiting temples and shrines throughout Japan from the 1970s onwards.
Together, the 80 pieces form a personal visual record of Japanese temple and shrine culture, Buddhist art, sacred architecture and domestic travel in Japan during the late 20th century.
An interesting collection for enthusiasts of Japanese Buddhism, Shinto, Buddhist sculpture, temple architecture, vintage postcards, Japanese photography and cultural ephemera.
