Vintage Japanese Hokuriku Gas Double-Sided Enamel Warning Sign – Showa Era
An unusual and highly atmospheric vintage Japanese industrial warning sign issued for Hokuriku Gas (Hokuriku Gas Co., Ltd.), a long-established gas utility company based in Niigata Prefecture, Japan.
This is a double-sided enamel metal sign with different warning messages on each side.
One side reads:
「ガス管注意」
“Caution – Gas Pipe”
The reverse side reads:
「ガス管 雪捨厳禁」
“Gas Pipe – Strictly No Snow Dumping”
The lower section bears the company name:
「北陸ガス」
Hokuriku Gas
and the telephone number:
TEL (代) 33-3200
The number 33-3200 corresponds to the telephone number used by the Nagaoka branch of Hokuriku Gas, currently listed as 0258-33-3200.
The two different warning messages are particularly interesting. Since Nagaoka and the surrounding Niigata region receive heavy winter snowfall, it is possible that the sign was designed so that the appropriate side could be displayed according to seasonal conditions: the “No Snow Dumping” side during the snowy season and the general “Caution – Gas Pipe” side at other times. However, the exact original installation method and seasonal use have not been documented and therefore cannot be confirmed.
The sign is made of enamel-coated metal and has a distinctive yellow background with large red Japanese characters and black Hokuriku Gas lettering. The typography and strongly utilitarian design give it an unmistakable appearance of vintage Japanese infrastructure and industrial signage.
Dating:
The exact manufacturing date is unknown.
Based on its construction, typography, telephone-number presentation and overall design, it appears to be a Showa-period sign, possibly dating approximately from the 1960s to the 1980s. This dating should be regarded as an estimate rather than a confirmed manufacturing date.
Hokuriku Gas has a long history. The company was originally established in 1913 and adopted the Hokuriku Gas name in 1944.
Dimensions:
Approx. 45 cm high
Approx. 15 cm wide
Approx. 0.1 cm thick, including slightly raised or uneven areas
Weight:
Approx. 424 g
Material:
Enamel-coated metal / vitreous enamel sign
Condition:
Authentic vintage used condition.
There is extensive age-related wear, including enamel loss, scratches, discoloration, stains, rust and corrosion around the edges and corners, surface deterioration, small damaged areas, and some warping/bending of the metal.
The lettering also shows substantial wear and fading.
These imperfections are clearly visible in the photographs and form part of the authentic aged character of this industrial sign.
Please carefully examine all photographs for the exact condition before bidding.
Collector's appeal:
Unlike commercial advertising signs, this appears to have been a practical infrastructure warning sign associated with the Japanese city-gas network.
Its double-sided construction, two different warning messages, heavy-snow-region context, old Hokuriku Gas identification and strongly aged enamel surface make it an interesting example of Japanese Showa-era industrial design.
Original utility and infrastructure signs of this type were made for practical outdoor use rather than as decorative products, and surviving examples with this degree of period character are increasingly interesting to collectors of Japanese enamel signs, industrial antiques, railway and infrastructure memorabilia, Showa-era objects and vintage Japanese typography.
A distinctive piece of Japanese industrial history with excellent decorative presence.
