Vom Verkäufer bereitgestellte Beschreibung

Aeolis, Neonteichos.
Ca. 3.–2. Jahrhundert v. Chr.
Æ (Bronze, 10,5 mm, 0,98 g).

Obv: Head of Athena to right, wearing crested Attic helmet decorated with griffin right.
Rev: Owl standing right, head facing; below, monogram of NE.

Reference: SNG Copenhagen 224. SNG München 599. SNG von Aulock 1670.

Neonteichos, meaning “New Wall,” was a small Aeolian city near the Hermos valley, between Larisa and Temnos. Ancient tradition linked its foundation to Aeolian settlers establishing a fortified foothold in western Anatolia. Herodotus counted it among the ancient mainland cities of Aeolis. Though overshadowed by larger neighbours, its surviving bronze coinage preserves the civic identity of this little-recorded community.
