Philadelphia in Lydia was an Attalid foundation named for Attalos II Philadelphos, whose epithet celebrated his loyalty to his brother Eumenes II. Situated on an important route between the Hermos and Maeander valleys, it became a centre of viticulture and the worship of Dionysus. Under Roman rule, the city recovered from the devastating earthquake of AD 17 and later numbered among the seven churches addressed in the Book of Revelation.
