Description

The Enigma is a variation of the standard Bowmore 12 Year Old but features a higher proportion of sherry casks (specifically Oloroso sherry casks) in its maturation. Consequently, this edition is typically slightly darker in color and richer and sweeter than the standard 12-year-old. This profile is balanced by characteristic Islay peat smoke—ranging from mild to robust—and a subtle salinity. The alcohol content is 40% ABV.

Tasting Notes

• Color: Deep bronze to coppery amber.
• Nose (Aroma):
• Classic Bowmore smoke combined with rich sherry sweetness.
• Notes of raisins, overripe plums, and berries.
• Hints of heather honey, vanilla, leather, tobacco, and a touch of fresh lemon or orange zest.
• Taste (Palate):
• Opens sweetly with the full flavor of sherry, dried fruit (raisins, figs), and honey.
• Quickly followed by a warmer spiciness (such as nutmeg and white pepper) and pleasant, soft peat and wood smoke.
• Undertones of black liquorice, vanilla, and a hint of seaweed/sea-salt salinity.
• Finish:
• Medium to long.
• Ends dry with an interplay of oak, fading ash, spices, and a final sweet hint of red fruit or peat.
