"The erotic photographs by Günter Blum became known to a broader public especially in the 1990s through his work in the fields of eroticism, nude photography, BDSM, and fetish, particularly through the theme of machine, fetish, and human. One of his best-known images was used in 1996 as the cover of Spiegel Spezial: Liebe und Triebe – Was ist normal? ("Love and Drives – What Is Normal?"). His black-and-white photographs were expressive, sensual, and at times provocative.
In the 1970s, he designed record covers featuring surrealist and futuristic motifs, including U.F.O.’s “Live” (1972, mistakenly credited as “Günther Blum”) and “Space Metal” (1976), King Ping Meh’s “Concrete” (1976), Parzifal’s “Legend” (1971), Prof. Wolfff’s s/t (1971), and the first LP by Grobschnitt, s/t (1972), without having listened to the music himself.
From 1989 onward, Blum devoted himself entirely to photography. His “Metropolis Series” was published in his first photo book, Akt. Inspired by Fritz Lang, the photographer created impressive and elaborate sets in which he primarily staged the female body. His work was published in magazines both in Germany and internationally, including Playboy, Penthouse, Stern, and Der Spiegel. His works were exhibited internationally, with some of his largest exhibitions shown at the Munich gallery Reygers.
In 1995, Blum married his long-time partner and model Sylvie Neubauer. She was the main subject in most of his works. The artist died of lung cancer on July 20, 1997. Today, Blum’s photographs are held in various private and public collections and museums."
