Unknown - Qur'an Manuscript - 1580

A single illuminated manuscript folio page from a 16th Century Safaivid Qur'an. The page has a single decorative illuminated chapter heading written in white thuluth script within a gold cartouche, with floral blue book ends unusually cutting across 4/5th's of the page. This manuscript contains scripture from the final verses of the Medinian Chapter 47, Muhammad, in which Allah provided the Prophet with advice about how the faith of the people will be tested and for those that withheld their faith and stick to worldly play and amusement, God will simply replace them with believers. It also contains the header of the Medinian Chapter 48 Al-Fath (The Triumph) v1-3 which introduces the treaty of Hudaibiyah. The Treaty of Hudaybiyah was a pivotal ten-year peace agreement in 628 AD between the Muslim community of Medina, led by Prophet Muhammad, and the Quraysh tribe of Mecca, marking a significant political recognition for the Muslims and facilitating the spread of Islam. Key terms included a truce, the return of Makkans who converted to Islam but fled to Medina, but not the return of Muslims who fled to Mecca. The treaty allowed the Muslims to perform their Umrah pilgrimage the following year for three days, paving the way for future victories and growth for the Muslim community. The scripture is in black nastaliq with simple but vibrant gold aya verse markings. An attractive large illuminated decorative marginal marks a 5th division of the Chapter. The scripture has multiple frame lines around it, including a solid gold surround The folio is in good condition for its age, with some slight thinning of the manuscript in places, only seen when holding the manuscript up to the light. .
