The front side presents a serene landscape with a five-storey pagoda surrounded by pine trees and blooming cherry blossoms. The roof tiles of the pagoda are delicately inlaid with shimmering mother-of-pearl (raden), creating a luminous, iridescent effect against the dark background. Pagodas are iconic architectural structures associated with Buddhist temples, symbolising spiritual ascent and protection. Pine trees represent longevity, resilience, and steadfastness, while cherry blossoms are deeply symbolic of life’s fleeting beauty and the arrival of spring. The reverse side of the screen depicts a pair of deer strolling through a river landscape set against a backdrop of brilliant red maple foliage. The deer are formed using brass inlay, lending a rich metallic accent to the natural scene. In Japanese culture, deer are considered sacred messengers of the gods and are often associated with peace and gentleness. The autumn maple leaves symbolise elegance, seasonal transition, and the beauty of change. The hand-painted artwork may be created using maki-e lacquer techniques, though this is not certain. Both sides are meticulously detailed, showcasing traditional motifs that evoke seasonal beauty and harmony with nature. There are areas of wear and minor discolouration on the surface due to age, and some light abrasions and small chips to the lacquered wooden frame. One of the base supports is slightly loose. Please refer to the photos for details regarding the condition. Dimensions: approx.
