Item Description This is an authentic Shigaraki ware flat jar with handles (mimitsuki henpei) by Okuda Monzaemon. The piece exemplifies the rustic beauty and traditional techniques of Shigaraki pottery, one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns. The vessel features a distinctive rounded, flattened form with a small neck opening and a decorative applied handle on the shoulder. The surface displays the characteristic natural ash glaze effects and fire markings that develop during wood firing in traditional climbing kilns. The clay body shows warm earth tones ranging from soft orange to grey-brown, with areas of natural ash deposit creating subtle surface variations. The piece demonstrates the natural aesthetic principles of Shigaraki ware, where the clay's inherent qualities and the effects of flame create unique patterns on each work. The rustic texture and warm coloration reflect the rich iron content of Shigaraki clay. The work comes with its original signed wooden storage box (tomobako) inscribed by the artist, confirming its authenticity.
