Signierter Ch. Schmoll Cameo, griechische Göttin Hebe & Zeus als Adler, ca. 1880 Antik - Camée

Superb antique cameo signed by Ch. Schmoll featuring the Greek goddess Hebe and Zeus as eagle. This particular piece is dating around 1880. The image shows a cameo depicting Hebe, the Greek goddess of youth, feeding ambrosia to Zeus, who is in the form of an eagle. Hebe was the cupbearer to the gods on Mount Olympus, serving them nectar and ambrosia. This theme was particularly popular during the Victorian era. The cameo is carved in relief, with Hebe holding a pitcher and the eagle Zeus perched beside her. The ad is for Charles Schmoll, the successor establishment to Schmoll Senior & Son, which was founded in 1838. They offer a large assortment of cameos in both hard stone and shell…. “med. expos. 1878”means they won a medal at the exposition of that year. Charles Schmoll & the earlier firm seem to be primarily dealers. Looks like Charles began to cut cameos himself. He seems to have signed everything he ever made, including this one. The signature was also confirmed by curator and the editor of Cameotimes Measurements: Length approximately 7 centimetres Weight: 6.70 grams Note: Many of my items are vintage and are therefore likely to show some age-related wear. This can include things such as: scratches, discolouration etc. Please be sure to look through each photograph carefully and read the description fully, to get an idea of quality.
