Medusa geschnitzte Muschel Victorian Cameo, 925er Sterlingsilber und blaue Emaille-Einstellungen. - Brosche - Italienisches geschnitztes Cameo

Superb Victorian hand-carved shell cameo brooch from approximately 1880, featuring Medusa, surrounded by cobalt blue enamel and paste stones, set in 925 sterling silver, in excellent condition. This museum quality cameo is surrounded by beautiful cobalt enamel and two rows of glorious hand-cut paste stones. The enameling is punctuated by forget-me-not flowers, thus adding to the romance of this piece. Her face is delicate and sweet, and despite her status as a mythological monster, she maintains an unparalleled Grecian beauty. Her hair is masterfully carved with three-dimensional snakes and features delicate wings. The workmanship is phenomenal and the subject matter, sublime. A bit of history: Medusa’s tale was elaborated upon by Greek poet Hesiod, writing in the eighth and seventh centuries B.C.E. According to him, and others later on in Greek mythology, Medusa was once a beautiful, winged priestess of Athena who attracted the attention of Poseidon, and through no fault of her own, was punished by Athena for an unavoidable situation. Athena, therefore, in a fit of rage, turned the once beautiful priestess into a half-human, half-gorgon with writhing snakes for hair, and a gaze that turned anyone who dared look at her into stone. The style and craftsmanship suggest it is from the Victorian era, around 1880. The cameo brooch is a fine example of Victorian jewellery, showcasing detailed carving, the use of contrasting materials, and the era's fascination with classical and mythological themes. The combination of the shell cameo, blue enamel, paste stones, and silver creates a visually striking and historically significant piece. Measurements: Length: The whole pin measures an impressive 5 cm by 4 cm Weight: 33.60 grams Hallmark: Not hallmarked, but tested as 925 sterling silver Important Note for Customers: Please be aware that this cameo brooch is substantial in weight.
