Exquisite Japanese Makie Lacquer Small Box (Kobako) by Heian-do – Unused

This is a stunning and unused Japanese lacquer Kobako (small decorative box) crafted by Heian-do (平安堂), a well-established and prestigious purveyor of traditional lacquerware, most likely based in Kyoto. The piece features deep black lacquer combined with elegant gold and silver Makie, making it a highly desirable collector’s item as well as a refined storage container.

Key Features & Provenance
• Maker: Heian-do (平安堂製)
The outer wooden box bears the stamp “Heian-do Sei” (Made by Heian-do). Heian-do is known as a respected, long-standing producer of high-quality Japanese lacquerware, admired for its refined design and excellent craftsmanship.
• Design
The lid presents a beautifully executed gold Makie motif of a large leaf (likely paulownia, described as “Kirumaru” in the inscription), accompanied by swirling vines and smaller leaves rendered in gold and silver Makie. The detailed work highlights the sophistication of traditional Japanese lacquer artistry.
• Condition
The lacquer box itself is in pristine, unused (dead stock) condition, retaining its rich, glossy finish. It has been carefully preserved inside its original wooden storage box.
• Functionality
Suitable for storing small valuables, jewelry, stamps/seals (inkan), business cards, or as an elegant decorative accent.

Dimensions
• Lacquer Box: 12.5 cm × 10.5 cm × 4.0 cm
• Wooden Storage Box (Kiri-bako): 15.3 cm × 13.0 cm × 5.0 cm

Condition Details
• Lacquer Box: Excellent, unused condition with no noticeable flaws.
• Outer Wooden Box: Shows natural vintage wear from long-term storage—light patina and slight fading of the handwritten inscription “桐丸小筥” and the “平安堂製” stamp. This is typical for kiri-bako and indicates that the wooden box has effectively protected the lacquerware.

A remarkable opportunity to acquire an authentic piece of Japanese craftsmanship from Heian-do, one of Japan’s respected high-end purveyors of traditional lacquerware.
