The peony (牡丹, Botan) is a classic subject in Japanese art and is regarded as the “king of flowers,” symbolizing wealth, prosperity, elegance, and prestige. The painting belongs to the kacho-ga tradition (bird-and-flower painting), highly appreciated in the modern era for its decorative elegance. The panels are surrounded by two splendid silk borders, while a lacquered wooden frame completes and protects the screen. The screen can also be easily mounted on a wall or used as a room divider.
