Okuninushi no Mikoto 大国主命 / Japanese Bicchu Kagura wooden folk craft mask
Okuninushi no Mikoto 大国主命
Okuninushi is the god of nation-building who created a large country in Izumo. He is the deity of Izumo Taisha and the central deity of the Izumo myth. He is a descendant of Susanoo-no-Mikoto, a kind-hearted deity who saved the White Hare of Inaba. He successfully overcame the many trials that Susanoo gave him and became the ruler of Ashihara no Nakatsukuni.
A finely carved wooden mask representing Ōkuninushi no Mikoto, the Shinto deity of nation-building, medicine, and matchmaking. Revered as a central figure in Japan’s mythological pantheon, Ōkuninushi is known for his role in shaping the land and guiding human relationships, making him a symbol of harmony, healing, and prosperity. This mask, crafted during the Showa period, features gentle yet dignified facial features: arched brows, a composed gaze, and a full mustache and beard rendered in natural fibers. The expression conveys wisdom and benevolence, reflecting the deity’s dual nature as both a ruler and a healer. Rope fittings are attached for wear or display, and the wood shows natural signs of age and use. Such masks were likely used in shrine rituals, folk festivals, or kagura performances to honor Ōkuninushi and invoke blessings of health, unity, and good fortune. A culturally rich artifact for collectors of Japanese mythology, Shinto iconography, and traditional mask carving.
