Takemikaduchi no Mikoto 武甕槌命 / Japanese Bicchu Kagura wooden folk craft mask
'Takemikaduchi no Mikoto 武甕槌命
As an emissary of Amaterasu Omikami, he and the deity Futsunushi no Mikoto pressured Okuninushi no Mikoto to hand over the country. Together, the two deities are called Ryokami. Takemikazuchi no Mikoto is a brave general and is meant to be a mysterious and valiant deity. He is the god of swordsmanship.
A powerful hand-carved wooden mask representing Takemikazuchi no Mikoto, the Shinto deity of thunder, swordsmanship, and martial valor. Known from Japan’s ancient chronicles as a divine warrior who descended to pacify the land, Takemikazuchi is enshrined at Kashima Shrine and revered as a protector of warriors and practitioners of martial arts. This Showa-period mask features bold and commanding facial features: furrowed brows, intense eyes, and a firm mouth that conveys strength and divine authority. The wood shows natural signs of age and ceremonial use, with braided cords for wear or display. The carving style reflects traditional folk craftsmanship, blending ritual function with mythological symbolism. Such masks were likely used in shrine festivals, kagura performances, or martial rituals to invoke protection, courage, and spiritual discipline. A rare and culturally resonant artifact for collectors of Japanese mythology, Shinto iconography, and warrior-related ceremonial art.
