Lothar Willmann, Werner Bräunig - Luftbilder aus der DDR („Aerial Photographs of the GDR“, WITH DUSTJACKET) - 1968

THIS IS THE VERY FIRST PHOTOBOOK AUCTION ON CATAWIKI - dedicated entirely to the world of the former "DDR"/"GDR" ("GERMAN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC" or "EAST GERMANY") which existed from 1949 to 1990. Still largely undiscovered and unexplored, this field offers a wealth of fascinating discoveries for collectors. 5Uhr30.com presents exceptional works by renowned and emerging artists, survey works, compelling monographs, as well as extraordinarily rare small vintage catalogues, vintage children’s books and vintage factory photobooks; signed publications, posters, and much more. WONDERFUL PHOTOBOOK - SHOWING THE GDR/DDR FROM ABOVE (so from an aerial perspective). Photos: Lothar Willmann. Text: Werner Bräunig. Until a few years ago, aerial photography was strictly regulated in almost all countries for military reasons. This was even more true in the GDR, where every topographic map sheet and every aerial photograph required official approval. Among the few private aerial photographers in the GDR was Lothar Willmann, who from the mid-1960s onward flew over the cities and landscapes between the Baltic Sea and the Ore Mountains, releasing the shutter of his camera. His first client was the airline Interflug, which used Willmann’s images to promote itself and the state abroad. Later, Willmann traveled as a freelance journalist through many countries, photographed for magazines, and published illustrated books. During his 40-year career as a photojournalist, he produced several thousand aerial photographs taken from various altitudes, mostly oblique shots, in black and white or color. The Archive for Geography has digitized and catalogued its collection of nearly 3,000 aerial photographs by Lothar Willmann. The photos show natural and cultural landscapes, castles and palaces, but above all medium-sized and large cities as well as elements of technical infrastructure. In many early photographs, the scars of the war can still be clearly seen in the urban landscapes. Later, new large housing estates and transportation structures became popular subjects. Willmann’s aerial images thus offer fascinating insights into urban development and the socialist transformation of cultural landscapes in the GDR. Like always we guarantee detailed and accurate descriptions, 100% transport protection, 100% transport insurance, and of course, combined shipping - worldwide. MAKE SURE YOU DON'T MISS THIS UNIQUE CHANCE! Brought to you exclusively by 5Uhr30.com, Cologne, Germany. Verlag Ludwig Simon, Munich in cooperation with Edition Leipzig. 1968. First (West) German edition, first printing. Hardcover with dustjacket. 245 x 275 mm. 168 pages. Photos: Lothar Willmann. Layout; Rudolf Grüttner, Berlin. Printing: Druckerei Fortschritt, Erfurt. Text: Wener Bräunig. Text in German. "The aerial photographs in this volume were released for publication by the Ministry of Transport of the German Democratic Republic. The following photographs were kindly provided to us as additional material by: Klaus G. Beyer, Erich Fritzsch, Christoph Georgi, Walter Hahn, Max Ittenbach, Gerhard Kiesling, Gerhard Murza.” (from the publisher) Condition: Book inside and outside clean with no marks and with no foxing; pages smell like smoke. Dustjacket complete with no missing parts, one small tear at the bottom of the rear side (taped from behind); little trace of use, inner front flap with crease, light yellowing. Overall fine condition. Impressive photobook - showing the GDR/DDR from above.
