The piece features a matte black surface adorned with irregular gold accents, evoking the quiet beauty of nature and the meditative spirit embodied in its title. The organic, asymmetrical form recalls a natural stone, harmonising contemporary design with traditional craftsmanship. Kawano Eiichi was born in Osaka in 1943. He first exhibited at the Nitten (Japan Fine Arts Exhibition) in 1973 and studied under the sixth generation Kiyomizu Rokubei in 1974. Among his numerous awards are the Kyoto Mayor’s Prize (1977 and 1988), the Nitten Special Selection (1978 and 2001), the Grand Prize at the Fletcher International Ceramics Competition in New Zealand (1990), the Shumei Culture Prize (1996), and the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award at the Japan Industrial Arts Exhibition (2002). He later served as a Nitten judge (2006 and 2010) and received the Nitten Member Award in 2011. Kawano is a member of Nitten, Executive Director of the Japan Industrial Arts Association, and Professor at Nara University of the Arts. The wooden box bears the inscription “Black and Gold Glazed Vase ‘Silence’” along with the artist’s signature and seal. The accompanying cloth is also stamped with his seal.
