Traditionally placed at village edges, crossroads, or mountain paths, they were believed to safeguard travellers and ward off harmful influences. Their origins pre-date the arrival of Buddhism in Japan, although over time their role often merged with that of the Buddhist Jizô. A common form of dôsojin depicts a harmonious elderly couple, thought to represent the figures Jô and Uba from the Takasago legend.
