Dôsojin are protective Shinto deities associated with roads, borders, and thresholds. Traditionally placed at village edges, crossroads, or mountain paths, they were believed to safeguard travellers and ward off harmful influences. Their origins pre-date the arrival of Buddhism in Japan, although over time their role often merged with that of the Buddhist Jizô.
A common form of dôsojin depicts a harmonious elderly couple, thought to represent the figures Jô and Uba from the Takasago legend. They symbolise longevity, protection, and a successful, enduring marriage.
