湯桶 [Kaiseki Utensils/Tea Ceremony Utensils] Yutou/Yuoke - Echter Lack - Japan - Shōwa Zeit (1926-1989)

*湯桶 In the tea ceremony, a yuoke is one of the tools used in the outdoor garden. It is a wooden container for pouring hot water into the hands of guests at a tea ceremony held in the cold season, in order to purify and warm them. It is placed in a tsukubai (a type of hand-washing basin) placed at the entrance. A yuoke is one of Japan's traditional tableware. It is a drinking container made of wood (or an imitation of it) with a lacquer coating, a spout, a handle, and a lid. Before the modern era, it was a very common container for pouring hot water or sake, but in modern times (after World War II), it has become a tool that is rarely used, and other than for kaiseki cuisine, it is used at soba restaurants to pour soba soup. There are two types: a square yuoke with a square body (kaku yuoke) and a round yuoke with a cylindrical body (maru yuoke). Traditional ones are made of wood with a lacquer coating, but ABS resin products are also becoming more common.
