Antique striking black lacquered Shonai chest in two sections, featuring rich hand-forged iron hardware.
Fully restored, cleaned, and waxed in Japan.
The drawer fronts are crafted from indigenous hinoki cypress wood. The top, front and sides are finished in a lustrous black lacquer.
Configured with three full-width drawers. Below, two drawers flank a heavily iron-clad hinged door, which opens to reveal two smaller drawers inside.
The drawers run smoothly and are generously proportioned. Fitted with sturdy ‘warabite’-shaped iron bail handles and adorned with large decorative repoussé lock plates decorated with chrysanthemums "kiku".
Each side is equipped with matching transport handles (totte).
These types of cabinets originate from the cities of Tsuruoka 鶴岡 and Shônai 庄内 in Yamagata Prefecture 山形県.
Period: Japan – Meiji period , 100-120 years old.
Dimensions: Height 100 cm, Width 85 cm, Depth 44 cm
In a very good, fully restored condition with traces of age. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference.
