Byôbu (Faltbildschirm) - Goldfarbige Silberfolie, lackiertes Holz, vergoldetes Metall - Japan - Späte Edo-Zeit (erste Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts)

Fantastic, tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) with a refined painting on goldish silver leaf featuring a collection of sensu 扇子 (folding fans) scattered across a river landscape. Showing both closed and open fans, each reveals diverse artistic motifs. Among them, a sumi-e 墨絵 (black ink painting) showcases plum blossoms 梅 (ume), another depicts a solemn moment of a figure honouring the tombstone of ancestors during harsh weather, a Rinpa School-style floral scene, vibrant green karakusa 唐草 (arabesque patterns), a Chinese landscape portraying a temple complex amid mountains, and more. A depicting of a ceremony during the Mifune Matsuri 三船祭 (Three Boats Festival), an annual festival in May that takes place in Kyoto's Arashiyama district where sensu fans of assorted colours are floated on the river Kamo. The story goes that long ago, when the Ashikaga Shogun visited the Tenryû temple near Arashiyama, a small boy that was with him in avertedly dropped his folding fan into the river, and the shogun was so moved by the beauty of the fan floating on the water, that thereafter everyone else too was impatient to see their own sensu float on the water. The vibrant polychrome paintings are set on a goldish silver leaf background. The panels are mounted by two brocade silk borders, a thin light one, and a broad dark brown one with a flower design. Framed by black lacquered wood fitted with protective hardware with a karakusa design Period: Japan – Late Edo period (First half 19th century). Dimensions: Total width: 370.2 cm (2 x 62.9 cm, 4 x 61.1 cm); Height: 172.5 cm. Considering its age in a very good condition with some minor traces of wear consistent with age and old restorations.
