Ide Gakusui's woodblock print designs were published by Watanabe Shozaburo in the late 1940's and 1950's. Born in Yamanashi in 1899, Gakusui studied Japanese-style painting with Yamanouchi Tamon and Araki Kanpo. He moved to China in 1929 and lived there until after World War II. In 1949, he began to collaborate with Watanabe on kachō-e (bird and flower) designs. He is best known for his prints of large cranes and herons. Much of Gakusui's work is realistic, resembling the designs of Ohara Koson and other kacho-e artists. Plate signed. Frame dimensions = 52 cm x 42 cm In good condition. Normal traces of age and use.
