"Barbara Metselaar Berthold is among the graduates of the renowned Leipzig Academy of Graphic and Book Arts, though she belongs to those cohorts who received solid technical training there rather than an artistic imprint. All the more impressive, then, are the free photographic works she created after arriving in (East) Berlin. Socially critical street scenes, portrait series of her large circle of friends, disconcerting views of the legendary “scene life” of Prenzlauer Berg, and finally a retreat into an ever more hermetic world of deliberate distance: few have made their inner state of mind in confronting the GDR system as legible in images as Barbara Metselaar Berthold, who left the country for the West in 1984.
After a long period of reorientation, she once again produced images in her characteristically laconic, “note-taking” style—now often created on extensive travels and, of course, in color. The attempt undertaken in this book to directly juxtapose photographs from the GDR era with those from her later life in the West probes beyond the obvious ruptures for the quiet continuities within such a changeful biography. An extraordinarily earnest act of self-questioning."
