Made of thin iron or leather and coated with lacquer, it served as a substitute for a helmet. Those worn by shoguns and samurai were made of wood and coated with lacquer. Later, it was called a 'kusaba' (chest cap), and came to be worn by samurai when going out. It was made of rubbed leather, with the inside lacquered in black, vermilion, silver, or gold. Some hats feature family crests on the front, while others are decorated with lacquer and light blue. This is an iron jinba hat for a daimyo (feudal lord) made during the Edo period. This one also features the family crest on the front and is painted vermilion on the inside. It is extremely rare to find one made of iron and then coated with lacquer. Size: 34cm (length) x 34cm (width) x 14cm (height) Weight: 1.8kg
