The work depicts a dramatic night-time scene during the First Sino-Japanese War, with Japanese naval officers studying a map under the glow of electric lights after securing the Pescadores Islands. In the background, warships and large artillery emphasise the military presence, while the moonlight and electric lamps create a striking contrast of light and shadow. The print shows an attempt at the urushi-e (lacquer-picture) technique, a method developed in the Edo period to add a glossy surface using lacquer-like materials. In this Meiji example, the effect is modest and not of the highest refinement, a trait occasionally seen in late 19th-century war prints. This triptych offers both historical and artistic value, capturing a moment of modern warfare with the blend of traditional woodblock printing and emerging Meiji-era technologies. The sheets have a faint old smell, traces of cellophane tape, one small reinforced hole, foxing, creases, and small corner tears. Please refer to the photos for a detailed condition view. Dimensions of a print: approx. H 35.7 cm W 24.3 cm ・Please make sure to review all the provided information and images before placing your bid. ・We make every effort to accurately represent the product's colors and textures in our photos.
