Ginkaku-ji Temple (銀閣寺) - Ido Masao 井堂雅夫 (1945-2016) - Japan (Ohne mindestpreis)
Item Description (English):
Presented here is a stunning woodblock-style print by the renowned Japanese artist Masao Ido (井堂雅夫), titled "Ginkaku-ji Temple" (銀閣寺), part of the Kyoto Hyakkei (京都百景) series, specifically from the Rakutō Jikkei (洛東十景) subseries.
This captivating winter scene portrays the iconic Ginkaku-ji (Silver Pavilion) in Kyoto, elegantly blanketed in snow beneath a serene full moon.
The print beautifully highlights the Zen garden’s raked gravel and the famous cone-shaped mound, symbolizing Mount Fuji, surrounded by snow-covered pines.
Masao Ido's delicate handling of color and shading brings out the stillness and spiritual clarity of a snowy Kyoto night.
This artwork is a masterful example of Ido’s ability to blend traditional Japanese aesthetics with contemporary sensibility.
Artist's Comment
Ginkaku-ji Temple
A temple of the Rinzai sect Shōkoku-ji school, it is known as the Silver Pavilion alongside the Golden Pavilion. It sits at the foot of Mount Daimonji in the Higashiyama mountain range.
Passing through the mountain gate and beyond the tall bamboo and camellia hedge leads to the garden.
My feeling that Ginkaku-ji is especially suited to scenes of snow gave birth to “Snow at Ginkaku-ji.”
Amidst the silent, steady fall of snow, the moon's faint glow feels warm.
The sight of snow piled upon the geometric sand mounds seems to emit a quiet melody from its delicate lines.
