【Product details】
This pair of small vases by Jinnai Sakata exemplifies his distinctive exploration of carbonised black pottery within the Mashiko ware tradition. The vessels display simple, powerful silhouettes with subtly differing contours, reflecting the artist’s mastery of form and texture through the potter’s wheel.
Fired in a high-temperature carbonisation process, the clay develops its deep charcoal tone and naturally varied surface. The rough tactile texture and traces of firing express the beauty of controlled imperfection, embodying the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi.
Each vase bears Sakata’s impressed seal mark on the base. Though similar in form, the subtle asymmetry and tonal variations make each piece unique, illustrating the individuality inherent in hand-thrown works.
Mashiko ware originated in the late Edo period in Mashiko Town, Tochigi Prefecture. Renowned for its earthy texture, generous thickness, and warm handmade feel, it remains one of Japan’s most beloved ceramic traditions.
Jinnai Sakata studied under Shoji Kamoda in 1964 and established his kiln in Mashiko in 1966. His works have been widely exhibited in Japan and abroad, and his creative practice extends beyond ceramics to include experiments in paper, glass, and lighting design.
Good used condition with natural variations from the firing process. Please refer to the photos for details.
