These goggles, named Ilgaak or Iggaak in the Alaskan dialects, were carved in such way to adapt to the face and to limit the brightness to the maximum, which explains the thinness of the openings at the level of the eyes.   The width of the openings directly affected the width of the vision.  According to the Inuits, the narrower the vision was, the greater the acuity of the vision was.  
Goggles with slits of different sizes were chosen depending on the climatic conditions (including the incidence and intensity of sun rays, following the seasons during the year).
Carved goggles are part of the equipment of hunters, fishermen, since ancient times, since we found goggles of the same type in marine ivory and bone, in archaeological sites (Old Bering Sea cultures).
