Jan de Beus, schilder tussen figuratie en abstractie

De Muiderbergse kunstenaar Jan de Beus behoeft geen lange introductie. In de jaren tachtig behoorde hij tot de Neue Wilden, een kunststroming die vooral door Duitse kunstenaars gedragen werd, maar waar ook sommige Nederlandse kunstenaars aansluiting vonden. Na zijn periode bij de Neue Wilden heeft hij een geheel eigen stijl ontwikkeld. Hij stelt zelf: ‘ik ben een klassieke schilder’. Zijn kunst getuigt van een voortzetting van oude kunsttradities. Hij schilderde onderwerpen als landschappen, portretten en naakten die voor een deel ontleend zijn aan oude kunsthistorische thema’s. Zo maakte hij reeksen van landschappen en stadsgezichten met onderwerpen als Muiderberg, Berlijn, de kathedraal van Canterbury of de Andreaskerk in Katwijk. Zijn pasteuze en organische manier van werken geven zijn schilderijen een geheel eigen identiteit. Maar ook maakte hij schilderijen ontleent aan bijbelse thema’s zoals de kruisiging van Christus, schilderijen waarop de beschouwer op een indringende manier geconfronteerd wordt met het lijden
