PILPAY, IL BRAMINO CHE EDUCA L’EUROPA
Un libro che introduce il lettore all’universo morale della tradizione indo-persiana, attraverso favole dense di insegnamenti e accompagnate da essenziali ma suggestive xilografie. Le Fables of Pilpay, più che semplici racconti d’intrattenimento, sono concepite come strumenti educativi, intesi a formare e indirizzare il lettore. Questa rara edizione inglese del 1818, rilegata con sobria eleganza, testimonia il perdurante fascino esercitato dalla cultura orientale sull’Europa ottocentesca. Un piccolo scontrino di un libraio di provincia, conservato all’interno, ne attesta il percorso.
MARKET VALUE
Considerata la datazione ottocentesca, la presenza di vignette incise in legno e l’interesse storico per l’autore orientale, l’opera ha un valore stimato tra i 300 e 500 euro, soggetto a variazioni secondo lo stato di conservazione e la completezza delle illustrazioni. La presenza dello scontrino originale del libraio R. Davies di Shrewsbury aggiunge un ulteriore elemento di curiosità collezionistica.

Volume in mezza tela contemporanea, con piatti in cartonato e etichetta in marocchino rosso sul dorso. Pagine ben conservate, accompagnate da vignette incise in legno, poste in testa o in margine ai testi. All'interno, sul verso del piatto anteriore, un scontrino del libraio R. Davies di Shrewsbury. (2); 12; 312; (4).

CONTEXT AND SIGNIFICANCE
Le favole di Pilpay, rielaborate da Hussein Vaiz Kashifi, portano la saggezza dell’Oriente all’attenzione del pubblico europeo. Tradotte e adattate per essere comprese e apprezzate dai lettori occidentali, queste storie vennero utilizzate come strumenti educativi per formare sia i giovani che gli adulti. In un’epoca in cui la letteratura illustrata aveva un forte valore morale e pedagogico, il loro successo riflette il bisogno di insegnare virtù e comportamenti attraverso racconti semplici ma profondi.

BRIEF BIOGRAPHY OF THE AUTHOR
Hussein Vaiz Kashifi (XV secolo), erudito e scrittore persiano, fu una figura di spicco del Rinascimento timuride. Autore di numerose opere religiose, etiche e letterarie, è noto in particolare per la sua rielaborazione delle favole attribuite a Bidpai o Pilpay, che egli trascrisse e arricchì nella raccolta intitolata Anvār-i Suhaylī. La sua influenza è evidente in molte versioni europee successive.

PILPAY
Pilpay, noto anche come Bidpai o Bidpah, è una figura leggendaria della tradizione indiana, identificata come il narratore delle favole contenute nel Panchatantra, una raccolta di racconti morali risalente al III-VI secolo d.C. Pur non essendo mai realmente esistito, il nome di Pilpay ha assunto nel tempo un valore simbolico: quello del saggio consigliere che, attraverso parabole con protagonisti animali, trasmette insegnamenti di natura politica, etica e comportamentale a un giovane sovrano. Le storie, tradotte in persiano, arabo e poi in diverse lingue europee, hanno avuto un ruolo centrale nella diffusione della sapienza orientale e hanno profondamente influenzato la favolistica occidentale. Pilpay rappresenta, dunque, una figura letteraria chiave per comprendere la trasmissione interculturale del sapere attraverso la narrativa allegorica.

PRINTING HISTORY AND CIRCULATION
Questa edizione inglese, stampata nel 1818, si inserisce nella lunga tradizione editoriale delle favole orientali in Europa, iniziata già nel XVII secolo. Pubblicata in forma sobria ma arricchita da vignette illustrative, riflette il gusto britannico dell’epoca per i libri didattici illustrati, spesso destinati a un pubblico giovanile o scolastico. La presenza dello scontrino di un libraio di Shrewsbury suggerisce una circolazione anche fuori dai grandi centri culturali.
