Freek van den Berg, Spaans Landschap, an original aquarelle from 1940-1950, 56 × 76 cm, the Netherlands, hand-signed, in good condition, sold by Galerie.
Description from the seller
Freek van den Berg (1918–2000) was a Dutch painter, often described as the last Dutch Fauvist. His work is characterized by bold use of color, expressive brushwork, and a preference for landscapes, figures, and cityscapes. Although he was largely self-taught, he received lessons from, among others, Frits Giltay in his early years. He was strongly inspired by French Fauves such as Kees van Dongen, Matisse, and Derain.
In addition to his work as a painter, Van den Berg was also active as an art critic for publications such as Het Parool and Vrij Nederland. In 1985, he moved to the village of Veessen on the IJssel, where his work became lighter and more tranquil in tone, influenced by the river landscape. Freek van den Berg developed a recognizable style that balances between Fauvism, Impressionism, and Expressionism, leaving behind a colorful oeuvre that is still loved by collectors.
