Description from the seller
Klaas Sans (Sappemeer, 1927) is a versatile Dutch artist known for his paintings, etchings, and wood engravings. He studied in various places, including Paris at the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, the Académie Ranson, and in the studio of Stanley William Hayter. His career then took him to several international art centers, including Groningen, Canada, Paris, and later The Hague, where he also worked for many years as a teacher of drawing, painting, and art history.
Sans's work moves between figuration and semi-abstract art. His visual language is poetic and sensitive, often stemming from personal experiences, encounters, and observations. Literature, philosophy, and major modernists like Cézanne and Mondriaan are important sources of inspiration within his oeuvre. Sans considers art as an ongoing dialogue with the world around him — not as a matter of style or taste, but as a form of learning, remembering, and rediscovering.
His work has been exhibited both domestically and internationally, including in the Netherlands, Germany, France, the United States, Cuba, and the former Yugoslavia. Works by Klaas Sans are part of both private collections and museum collections, including the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.
The painting offered here is a fully original work by Klaas Sans and comes from the collection of the Municipality of The Hague. This not only guarantees authenticity but also highlights the cultural and art historical significance of the work within his oeuvre.
