Japanese hanging scroll attributed to Kishi Chikudo from the Meiji period (19th century), hand-painted on silk with bamboo roller ends, measuring 197 cm by 71 cm overall with a painting area of 111 cm by 50.5 cm, depicting a winter scene with a small bird, falling snow and autumn flowers in good condition.
Description from the seller
This elegant hanging scroll depicts a quiet winter scene with a small bird in flight, gently falling snow, and seasonal plants emerging beside a flowing stream. The delicate contrast between the pale snowy ground and the vivid autumn flowers creates a refined sense of seasonal transition and poetic stillness.
The composition emphasizes space and atmosphere, allowing the viewer’s eye to move calmly through the landscape. Fine brushwork and subtle color accents reveal the influence of Meiji-period naturalistic painting, while maintaining a classical Japanese sensitivity to nature and impermanence.
The work is traditionally attributed to Kishi Chikudo (1826–1897), a painter known for expressive yet refined depictions of nature. While the attribution is based on tradition rather than definitive documentation, the subject matter, brush technique, and compositional balance are consistent with paintings from the Kishi school and the Meiji era.
A graceful and contemplative hanging scroll, suitable for a tokonoma, seasonal display, or refined interior.
