Description from the seller

Marie Bracquemond (1840-1916) / Félix Bracquemond (1833-1914).

"The Terrace."

Etching and drypoint on chamois paper. Eighth state of eight.
Signed, titled, and dated on the plate.

Published by L'Art in 1876 (shortly before the pair of artists exhibited at the Salon des Impressionists).

Printer: Atelier Alfred Christophe Fortuné Salmon (1825-1894), Paris, 1876.

Sheet size: 29 x 43 cm.
Plate size: 25 x 35.5 cm.

This etching depicts the Impressionist artist Marie Bracquemond painting her sister (Louise Quivoron) on the terrace of the Villa Brancas in Sèvres.
We hold it as a treasure, in perfect condition. Gilded wooden frame with glass, with some imperfections, 41.5 x 51 cm.

Based on our information, we believe this is an etching co-created by the couple. Despite his initial reservations about Impressionism in both form and content, Félix Bracquemond eventually embraced the movement's tenets regarding line and color. He was a friend of the most important Impressionists of the time, such as Manet, Degas, Pissarro, and Whistler. Along with them, he is one of the figures in the famous painting "Homage to Delacroix," which Henri Fantin-Latour painted in 1864. As for Marie Bracquemond, her married status and her husband's views on Impressionism limited her opportunities to develop as a painter, and she eventually abandoned painting. She is currently considered one of the greatest Impressionist artists in art history, alongside Mary Cassatt and Berthe Morisot.

This jewel is found in museum collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
