Waterman, Model 12 1/2 safety fountain pen in red marbled celluloid with gold-plated fittings, from the early 20th century, 115 mm long and 10.4 mm in diameter, with a solid gold Waterman’s Ideal nib and a retractable nib mechanism in working order.
Description from the seller
The pen is presented in very good condition, notably remarkable considering it is a Waterman's 12 1/2 safety pen from the late 19th / early 20th century, a type of mechanically complex instrument that is increasingly rare to find in such preservation.
The body and the cap of the red marbled ebonite preserve a vivid and well-defined coloration, with deep veins and marked contrast. Surface signs of use and natural patina are evident, homogeneous and consistent with age, without cracks, fissures, or material loss. The original threads are intact and functional.
The safety mechanism with a retractable nib is complete, preserving all its original elements. The system allows the nib to be moved by turning the body, fully retracted for transport and extended for writing, just as it was originally designed.
The Waterman's Ideal nib in solid gold is in excellent structural condition, with no breaks or repairs. It exhibits functional flexibility, allowing a natural and progressive variation in stroke under controlled pressure, a quality especially appreciated in early Waterman nibs. No signs of excessive fatigue or permanent deformations are observed.
The hardware and elements gold-plated show slight, uniform wear, with a patina consistent with age, without dents or structural losses. The engravings on the body remain clear, deep, and perfectly legible, reinforcing their authenticity and historical value.
Overall, it is an honest, original, and mechanically complete piece, suitable for both advanced collection and very careful use, distinguished by the uncommon combination of a flexible nib and a retractable safety system.
It will be sent in a courtesy box for proper preservation.
