Raoul Dufy (1877-1953) - La Danese

La Danse, is a posthumous print issued in 1950 by the estate of the Atelier Raoul Dufy, after the original design from the celebrated “Quatre Bois” series (c. 1910–1911). The series included four emblematic woodcuts: L'Amour, La Danse, La Chasse, and La Pêche. Raoul Dufy, a prominent figure of Fauvism, originally created these works as explorations of rhythm, movement, and festivity through bold linear forms.

The print is executed on Vélin Pur Fil Marais, a fine art paper recognizable by its deckle edges and visible watermark, as shown in the photos. It also bears the Atelier Raoul Dufy ink stamp in the lower right margin, authenticating its origin. The sheet showcases a beautifully expressive composition with dynamic figures surrounded by lush foliage and a sailing ship—echoing Dufy’s joyous visual language.

Raoul Dufy (1877–1953) was closely associated with Fauvist artists such as Henri Matisse, André Derain, Maurice de Vlaminck, Albert Marquet, Kees van Dongen, Charles Camoin, Othon Friesz, and Georges Rouault. His radiant palette and lyrical style continued to inspire later artists like Jean Dubuffet, Marc Chagall, Carlos Nadal, and abstract painters such as Willem de Kooning, Fernand Léger, Robert and Sonia Delaunay, and Sam Francis. His legacy resonates in the broader context of 20th-century modern art.

This edition is limited to 220 numbered impressions plus some artist proofs (essai). Though printed posthumously, it preserves the full vitality of Dufy's early work and workshop precision.

Condition:
In overall good condition. The impression is strong and the image is clean and vibrant. There are two small cuts (less than 1 cm), and a minor fold to one margin. Some soft handling creases are present, with slight discoloration around the edges due to age. These issues are minor and do not affect the central image, which remains visually striking.
