Maritime Object (7) - Hand-blown glass- Rare set with 2 cylinder

A carefully selected mixed set of 7 authentic Japanese hand-blown glass fishing floats, collected in northern Japan. This attractive lot includes two rare cylinder-type floats (rolling-pin style) and five spherical floats, showcasing a harmonious range of traditional sea-glass colours. Notably, this set features floats with original Japanese markings, including a clearly legible Kanji mark “川口” (Kawaguchi) and a Katakana mark “シ”, both highly appreciated by collectors as indicators of regional production and genuine working use. These floats were traditionally used by Japanese fishermen from the early to mid-20th century, particularly along the northern coastal regions such as Hokkaido and Tohoku. Japan was one of the earliest countries to adopt glass fishing floats, beginning production in the early 1900s as a durable and buoyant alternative to wooden and cork floats. By the 1930s–1960s, Japanese hand-blown glass floats were widely used not only throughout Japan but also across the Pacific. Many traveled overseas through fishing networks and ocean currents, later becoming treasured collector’s items. Each float was individually mouth-blown, resulting in natural bubbles, tool marks, swirling glass textures, and slight asymmetry. These features clearly distinguish genuine working floats from modern decorative reproductions. The cylinder-type floats included in this set were typically used for longline or net stabilization and are considerably rarer today than standard spherical examples. Details Quantity: 7 pieces Types: 2 cylinder floats, 5 spherical floats Markings: Kanji “川口”, Katakana “シ” (clearly visible) Colours: aqua, green, deep green, light amber, blue-green Sizes (approx.) Spherical floats: approx. 5.5–9.3 cm diameter Cylinder floats: approx. 12.5 cm and 15.2 cm length Condition Vintage condition with natural bubbles, surface scratches, tool marks, weathering, and minor wear consistent with long-term sea use. These honest signs of age reflect their authentic working history and add significantly to their unique character and charm. The original markings “川口” and “シ” are clearly legible, as shown in the close-up photographs. Shipping Carefully packed for international delivery. Tracking number provided.
