Description from the seller
Louis Nagelkerke (Eindhoven, February 3, 1949) has been working as a professional artist since 1980. Louis is a versatile artist and never without inspiration or new ideas. Movement, beauty and mystique are characteristic of his artworks. He is especially inspired by life in the Indonesian archipelago and is fascinated by the mystery of its inhabitants, both human and animal. His inspiration often concerns the Eastern human. Musicians, dancers and female dancers, in particular the people of the beautiful island Bali. People from the theater are also often his models. The subjects for his work are as varied and rich as life itself. But always recurring is his love for Eastern culture and religion, music and dance. Louis Nagelkerke is especially known for his very realistic depictions of people, “bringing out the beauty in man and beast.” That is the artist’s credo, who with his paintings wants to make the world more beautiful. He is capable of painting the essence of the image in pose and mood with precision.
In this warm and delicately worked piece, Nagelkerke portrays a mother with her sleeping child. The child rests peacefully on her back, carried in a traditional red cloth with graceful patterns and Eastern symbols. The mother is shown in profile, with a calm and concentrated gaze forward, while the sleeping face of the child exudes complete relaxation. The background in warm earth tones enhances the congenial and harmonious atmosphere.
