Lucebert (luce = light, bert = bright) was the pseudonym of Lubertus Jacobus Swaanswijk. This poet - also active as a visual artist - was born in 1924 in Amsterdam. In the 1950s, he emerged as the leader of the Movement of Fifty, the group of experimental poets that caused quite a stir at the time.

In the second half of the 1940s, during his wandering years, Lucebert was very productive as a poet and as a draftsman. On every piece of paper he came across, he would write poems or make drawings. His life as a wanderer came to an end around 1952 when Lucebert met Tony Koek, the woman he would later marry. Together, they moved into an attic room in Amsterdam. The following year, in 1953, the two moved to the artist's village Bergen, where they were able to stay for a while in the garden house of Gerrit Kouwenaar's sister. In 1954, Lucebert received his first grant for artists, which enabled him to continue living in Bergen. During the 1950s, he created many drawings on commission for publishers and newspapers.

For financial reasons, Lucebert was only able to start painting from 1957. He began selling his work increasingly well, which allowed him to purchase paint and canvas. During the period from 1957 to 1962, Lucebert created many paintings.
