Artist biography
Emili Sanjuan (Tarragona, 1978) is a Catalan contemporary painter known for his luminous and poetic interpretation of the landscape. Born in the Serrallo neighborhood in Tarragona, he grew up surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea and the contrasts between the coast and the inland, elements that later would become the essence of his work.
Trained at the Escola d’Art i Disseny de la Diputació de Tarragona and later at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Barcelona (UB), Sanjuan specialized in oil painting and mixed media techniques. During his years of training, he showed an early interest in the Catalan landscape tradition, especially in artists such as Joaquim Mir, Modest Urgell, or Salvador Martorell, though reinterpretations from a contemporary sensibility.
His painting stands out for a Mediterranean palette filled with ochres, greens, and dusty blues. Emili Sanjuan works with a loose and enveloping brushstroke, halfway between atmospheric realism and lyrical abstraction. His best-known series, Terra endins (2015–2018) and Llum de litoral (2019–2023), traverse corners of all Catalonia: from the fields of Segarra and the vineyards of Penedès to the cliffs of the Costa Brava or the rice paddies of the Delta de l’Ebre.
They have exhibited in galleries in Reus, Girona and Barcelona, and at art fairs such as Swab Barcelona or Art Madrid. Their work is included in private collections in Spain, France and Andorra. In recent years, they have combined their artistic practice with teaching, offering workshops on contemporary landscape at local art centers and collaborating on art and nature projects.
According to their own words, “to paint a landscape is not to copy the earth, but to translate its light into the language of emotion.”
