Born in Los Angeles in 1960 to Estonian immigrants, Mark Kostabi is one of the most influential and provocative figures on the New York art scene since the 1980s, a period when he became a central figure in the East Village alongside artists such as Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Famous for his stylized, faceless human figures — which serve as universal mirrors for the human experience, love and alienation — Kostabi has fused the language of pop art with surrealist and Renaissance influences. His works are part of permanent collections in the world’s most prestigious museums, including MoMA (New York), The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim, the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo and the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome.
